This Is the Most Reliable Airport in the United States

Find out where to find the shortest delays and the fewest cancellations - and which large location has two of the worst performers.

Catch a plane should be simple enough. Go through security, find your way to the gate, get in and let the pilots do their thing. In reality, however, in 2020, about 15 percent of flights were held up by delays, cancellations, and reroutings, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. And that's after flights have been given 15 minutes of leeway before being considered delayed.

However, you cannot expect the same number of delays from every airport. The travel website Upgraded Points researched 60 US airports to find which had the highest levels of customer satisfaction, considering the number of canceled and delayed flights, easy transportation to a city center, and airport facilities. FYI, if you haven't traveled in a while you won't see these things in airports.

But not all of these metrics were weighted equally. The “overall satisfaction” was weighted at 45 percent and included many individual reliability indicators such as the efficiency of the security and baggage claim processes. “Average delay / abort times” had a weight of 25 percent. This category evaluated three different metrics from data from the US Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics: "the average minutes delay from scheduled departure to take-off, total percentage of flights delayed, and total percentage of flights canceled."

Other factors that contributed to the overall ranking were the “airport public transport” weighted at 15 percent; “Lounge access” at 10 percent; and “Wi-Fi” at 5 percent. All of these metrics were given a score from 1 to 5, and these scores were weighted and combined to give the airport's total score.

Portland International Airport outperformed the others with an overall score of 4.51 out of 5. However, it wasn't the winner in the Delay and Cancellation Times category, which is possibly the most important factor in "reliability", but it was the second place ! In this category it had a score of 4.65 out of 5, just behind the top scorer, Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. Alaska Airport scored 4.85 out of 5 in this category, but only finished fourth on the overall satisfaction list. The second and third place winners were Denver International Airport and Tampa International Airport, respectively. The San Francisco International Airport rounded off the top 5.

At the other end of the spectrum, Ohio's John Glenn Columbus International had the lowest score. However, the score for delay and cancellation times was only the seventh worst at 2.5 out of 5. However, there was an airport that had one 1 out of 5 in this category: Newark Liberty, in New Jersey. It had an average departure delay of 30 minutes. Who knows - maybe these bizarre reasons for flight delays are to blame. In the overall standings, Newark finished fourth from the bottom. Nearby LaGuardia Airport also caused serious dissatisfaction, with a score of 1.35 for average delay and cancellation times and an average departure delay of 30 minutes, just like Newark. And on the overall list it was even lower than Newark: second worst. If you're stuck at the airport, at least these free activities keep you entertained while you wait for your flight.
